Marriage is the unity of two hearts and minds and it can also happen in a legal relationship. However, if a couple is planning to have children, then it is always better that they get married in the court for the children’s sake. You are going to have to present legal evidence of your marriage at every step along the way after you get married. Also, when you are marrying someone who is not an American, then the legal aspect should not be ignored as the marriage certificate will provide all the necessary evidence for the person to get the status of a legal alien in the country.
There is nothing wrong with living together before you get married. It also gives you a perspective of how marriage is going to be and whether you are prepared enough to handle this commitment for the rest of your life. Some people get married and then end up divorcing because there is no compatibility in the relationship. So, when you have a relationship and are living together, you would know if there is compatibility in the relationship and if you both can live with each other or not.
Eventually after having a live in relationship you can always decide to get married to each other. Marriage can come later when you are sure of yourself.
