Civil marriage has come a long way in the United States. Women have more rights from a marriage than what it used to be about a century ago. Here is a look at the history of civil marriage in the United States.

History of Civil Marriage in the United States:

  • 1830 – Mississippi passed the law that the woman has the right to her husband’s property and also can own property on her name.
  • 1848 – New York passed the right for a married woman to have property on her name.
  • 1854 – Polygamy was recognized and Bigamy was considered legally wring and a felony which is punishable by time in prison.
  • 1862 – The Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act, was signed into a law by Abraham Lincoln and finally bigamy was considered as a felony.
  • 1882 – The Edmunds Act was passed by the congress which considered cohabitation as also equal to bigamy and a legally punishable crime.
  • 1907 – All women were given their husbands nationality after marriage.
  • 1933 – Married women had the right to hold independent citizenship after marriage.
  • 1948 – The ban on interracial marriages was removed by the California court.
  • 1965 – Contraception was legalized and married couples could use them if they wanted.
  • 1969 – The right to divorce legally was passed on by California.
  • 1975 – Married women got the right to hold credit on their name.
  • 1976 – Married women lost the right to abort without the husband's consent. This was passed by the US Supreme Court.
  • 1993 – Domestic violence was recognized and marital rape was also recognized by the court.
  • 1994 – Same sex marriage was outlawed by more than 40 states in the US.
  • 2004 –Massachusetts legalizes same sex marriage.
