The usual norm until now is that the engagement ring should cost as much as 2 months of your salary. It is a common belief that has been coming along for a few decades now.
However, now people are getting their own opinions and would rather like to do something on their own. They spend less than their 2 months salary, or somewhere about that amount. Or, if you have the means, you can splurge on the ring.
