There are different circumstances why a marriage is nullified. If the couple is underage, then the marriage is obviously nullified and has no legal bearing. Another reason why a marriage can be nullified is when the couple is related through bloodline. Some other reasons for annulment include when there is refusal of sexual intercourse, or misrepresentation, or due to a prior marital status.
The difference between a divorce and a marriage annulment is that an annulment would mean that the marriage never really took place and therefore, did not exist, whereas a divorce would mean separation of a married couple.
In a marriage annulment, the reason for a couple to separate is really very short and it could happen within a few weeks of marriage. The reasons may be several, but if a couple feels that the marriage was a big mistake as soon as they got married, then marriage annulment is the best way out. It does happen in the Unite States where couple people get married overnight and then wake up in the morning realizing that it is a big mistake.
