A marriage counselor is a person who does not know either of you and views the situation as it is. He or she gives an opinion or advice as to what you both should be doing. Marriage counseling only works when both of you go together.
The counselor will speak to you both separately, but she or he will also speak to you together.
When you speak to a neutral third party, you will get a third person's perspective, who will not judge, but will give you constructive ideas to work on your relationship. Also, marriage counselors will always not work towards making a relationship work. If they feel a certain couple is not made for each other, they will let you know. Sometimes, two people who are totally not meant for each other end up together.
So, if you feel your marriage is feeling apart, then you should probably visit a marriage counselor, who will help you both in sorting out your differences. You will be given a different perspective on how you should deal with a relationship.
