Where sexual attraction is concerned, we can be attracted to people of our own gender (same sex attraction), to people of the opposite gender or to individuals of either gender. Many adolescents identify themselves as homosexuals because they are attracted to same sex individuals. However, adolescence is the time when the body goes through multitude changes -- physical, emotional and hormonal. And more often then not, adolescence is a confusing period in our lives where we do not know how to deal with these changes.
Studies have shown a link between adolescence and same sex attraction and this attraction usually occurs at puberty. Puberty is the time when sexual identity develops and studies have proven that sexual feeling appear in individuals at an age of 10 years long before the children can give themselves a sexual identity. The same sex attracted adolescents can feel torn between wanting to tell people about their feelings and suppressing them out of fear of rejection. This leads to additional pressure on adolescents when they are trying to discover their sexual identity.
Usually adolescence and same sex attraction go hand-in-hand but pressures to conform to the society cause many adolescents to question or deny their sexual attractions even to themselves. Many adolescents end up getting confused with the feeling especially if sexual attraction is a new to them.
